Multiple news outlets are reporting that three elderly Mennonite women (84-90) were attacked in a home invasion and subdued using a stun gun. The attack took place in Clay Township, Lancaster County and is said to be a hate crime. After stunning the women,t he assailant threw cleaning liquids over the floor and raged at the women about their religion. One person is now in custody. I can't help wishing that the Mennonite people I know were less pacifist and more defensive, at this point.
Well, locking up all the "lethal weapons" such as guns would not have stopped this crime. In fact, perhaps a simply loaded small derringer owned by the 90 year old would have stopped this attack. Locking up all the stun guns won't solve these issues either. Crazy people filled with hatred will use anything from drano, knitting needles, flammables,bleach, ammonia, string or wire used for strangulation, or about anything else. You cannot restrict OBJECTS from the general public and expect attacks to disappear. The problem are the minds and souls of domestic and foreign terrorists who wish to do harm to anyone who does not agree with them.
The up to the minute information states that Dereck Taylor Holt, 22, of no fixed address, is facing
the following charges:
- Aggravated Assault
- Simple Assault
- Reckless Endangerment of another Person
- Ethnic Intimidation
- Unlawful Restraint
- Robbery
- Burglary
- Theft by Unlawful Taking or Disposition

It takes real "men" to attack little children and old ladies. They must be so proud. Yes, I know, they wouldn't even understand my sarcasm.
I never thought I would live long enough to see a 22 year old, Mennonite or otherwise, attack three women aged 84-90. Where is his respect, his empathy for another human being ? Where was his UPBRINGING ?
Horrible, horrible crime. But I refuse to condemn the Mennonites for being pacifists, even though I would not be anywhere near as pacifist in such a situation. They are simply expressing their faith, and accepting the fact that there are sometimes unpleasant side effects of expressing their faith while living on this earth, much like with many other faiths.
Yes David, I can't condemn them for practicing the pacifism which is part of their faith. My husband's ancestors are a founding family to the Anabaptist movement which became the Mennonites. I have nothing but admiration for them, and we have Mennonite friends and family. I am enraged at someone who would attack them, knowing this. I suppose we know I am no pacifist. I believe in self defense. Thanks for your post.
One thing that we should keep in mind about home invasion is that these perpetrators can have multiple intentions of invading our house.
I apologize for the incident. We have to be cautious to avoid this crime.
