The Opportunisitic Recent Legal Gun Seizure in Canada

The flood is gone but the road stays closed until we are finished breaking in to your houses and confiscating your legally owned rifles.

Recently in the High River country of Canada's province of Alberta, there was really significant flooding.   Absolutely massive flooding caused all residents of some regions to evacuate by boat.  They were also upset when they could not return to their homes for a time after water had receded.  You can imagine their horror when they learned that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police had seized their legally owned rifles from their homes while they were gone.  Canadians did not take any more kindly to this action than Americans would have.    The authorities say that "People have a lot invested in their guns and we just wanted them to be safe".    How about a public service announcement to secure your rifles before evacuating ?   Most Canadians who are vetted pretty tightly before even being allowed to have a hunting rifle don't exactly leave their weapons loaded and out on the coffee table. Do they really think that the police needed to break down doors to get rifles ?   What about the property that was destroyed during the confiscation process ?    The Canadian government says that the guns will be returned shortly.

Ed Burlew, a lawyer and firearms specialist in Ontario, weighed in on the legality of the RCMP’s apparent actions.
“This is without precedent, this is unreasonable search and seizure,” he said. “The entry was illegal, it’s against the charter, it was unreasonable search and seizure. There’s no judge that would uphold the evidence obtained through an illegal entry into a person’s home.”

A  non voluntary seizure of  a "substantial" number of privately owned rifles left residents outraged and necessitating the sending of RCMP reinforcements.

This was a terrible mistake on the part of decision-makers and also of police.  Most people in Canada have the utmost respect for the few local RCMPs that serve their region.  Now, they won't, and this is always a bad thing.

Funny, isn't it ?   This is exactly how your American cousins feel.    Be vigilant folks.  Be vigilant.

With every new law and police action like this, a whole new group of patriots are created. These people were soft targets, I wonder what the real criminals were doing while the RCMP was practicing their Nazi door kicking.

Apparently, SF, The RCMP WERE the real criminals!

And, the RCMP were supposed to keep people from looting? What? So, the RCMP could have first dibs? Shocking. I really thought Canada was better than this. Who authorized this? So you know?

If the RCMP was really worried about the guns, why break doors down after the residents were evacuated? None of this makes sense.
If I have to evacuate, the guns would go with me.

Breaking, entering (without due process or a search warrant) and STEALING private property is okay as long as it involved guns. Yep. Sounds about right. I wonder what will happen with any unregistered fire arms?

I would like to know who authorized this. I think if there hadn't been such an outcry with outrage, they would have kept them, and then the precedent is set.

I don't know who authorized this. The articles I read do not say exactly where the order and authorization came from. Canada normally IS better than this.

In the US my guns would go with me. In Canada, guns are not permitted to be used for self defense only for hunting. People may have thought that taking them from home was a sure way to have them confiscated.

Canada's long gun registry ended some time ago. Hunting rifles are permissible. Handguns are almost impossible to get in most circumstances, without being a police officer.
