Homeschooling Family Taken By SWAT Team Returned for Now

( Graphic from: www.thepacket.ca  )

Three hours ago the four German children snatched from their parents by a SWAT team for the heinous offense of homeschooling in Germany, were returned to their parents on the condition that they attend school.

The entire update on this matter including links can be found on my original post at:

The Obama administration did not condemn this action, even though it is a clear violation of human rights under the United Nations.  Hmmmm.

Well at least they are back for now. My bet is their trouble with meddling government is no where near over though.

Maybe they need to move to another country; it sounds like Hitler is still hiding in the shadows.

It depends on who does what, this did not involve Muslims.

My guess is you're right. This also portends trouble for the hundreds of other families who homeschool in Germany.

I would move. However there are lots of other homeschooling families in Germany. Homeschooling is perfectly legal in most nations in Europe, so long as it is done in accordance with national or local law. Germany has signed papers in agreement with the United Nations civil rights laws and still harasses those who don't use their schools for indoctrination.

I sympathize with the family and am as appalled as anyone at the heavy-handed enforcement methods used, but the bottom line is that, right or wrong, fair or unfair, the law in Germany says no homeschooling and the parents should know that. If they were engaging in a civil disobedience act they need to be prepared to accept the consequences of their choices, or at least fly a little lower under the radar next time, until such a time comes that the law can be changed. Just because a law sucks doesn't mean that it can be ignored with impunity.

The law prohibiting homeschooling in Germany was enacted by Hitler, and has not been revisited since then. The excuse for not doing so is that they fear Muslims setting up homeschools which teach Jihad. However, the UN told Germany to structure a manner in which diligent homeschooling would be permitted YEARS ago. Germany still harasses homeschooling families, and this story is only one of them.

Yes. My way would be to lobby to change the law while supporting my kids in the best school I could find. (And my military homeschooling friends had to go to school at a German school when they were in Germany) I would not risk my kids to advance a point I wanted to make or to support a change in law that I thought was necessary. However, I still think a practice which is legal and supported in the rest of Europe (except Bulgaria btw) should have mechanisms whereby it is possible. My kids were tested every year from 1990 onward to prove that they were making good academic progress. (Of course testing stopped when they went to college) It wasn't a lot to ask, and it ensured that people were doing the job.

The reason Obutthead didn't say anything, They will be doing it here soon enough. Just watch. Dept of Ed has weapons now.

I am afraid that is what I believe. In order to properly indoctrinate the poorly educated masses, he will likely need to stop homeschooling. He needs all the young people in school in order to properly brainwash them in the war against mayonnaise, regular soda, firearms, water usage, capitalism, and global warming. They also need proper instruction in spying on their parents and reporting them to the proper authorities, just like Hitler did.

Thank God! I can say in the early 90's when we lived in Germany and were homeschooling it was a HUGE issue. We were military but lived on the economy(off base), and were threatened with legal action. It was surreal but the way things were. I am thankful we had four years there but ever so happy to return to the US. I am thinking things are changing here so quickly that homeschooling may be challenged more and more.

Thank you for posting, Jennifer. In the early nineteen-nineties we had close friends who were a large homeschooling family family whose father was a high ranking military medical person. They were sent to Germany for several years, and their commanders told them that they could not homeschool while they were there and that they would need to find a school. They elected to use a German school. Every other afternoon, all afternoon, the subject was Ethics, and this was when the indoctrination as to how to be a good German was done. This is the part of education that the government requires is not missed. Of course this is a dangerous precedent.
So far, in the US, Homeschool Legal Defense Association lobbies hard for our homeschool freedoms.

I am still appalled that the regime is trying to deport the Romeike family- the Christian German family who sought refuge here so they can homeschool. But if you're an illegal sucking on the system or a radical muslim, you can stay.

I was at my kid's Little League game last week and overheard a phone conversation another mother was having. Her 13 year old honor student is facing expulsion or at very minimum a 3 day suspension for having Motrin at school. The girl's mother gave her the Motrin to treat a softball injury per doctor's orders. Even when I was in school, kids were supposed to leave all meds with the school nurse, be it an inhaler (that's real convenient if you're having an asthma attack) or a cough drop. These days, many schools don't even have a nurse on duty everyday.

The last thing I want to do is send my precious children into that kind of environment!

Yes. When our kids attended public school, we also did not have a school nurse. My kids carry epipens for beesting allergy and my daughter ultimately was a Type I diabetic who did 4x day blood sugar testing and insulin 4x a day until she got an insulin pump. The school agreed to let me BE the school nurse on a voluntary basis. I could not believe with all kids they had with everything from tubefeedings to HIV, they didn't have a nurse !
I pray for both the Romeike Family and the Wunderlichs. Frankly, Canada wouldn't treat them any better. The world is slowly and sometimes, not so slowly, going mad.

In some reason other people didn't know the Homeschooling Facts probably this is one of their stepping stone for those who can't travel in particular school.

Zelma, Thank you for including the link to "Homeschooling Facts". Homeschooling families are indeed quite diverse, as are their children. They tend to do extremely well in universities. My two eldest graduated with honors. One is in a university now, and one will be going in a year or so. Thanks for your post.
